What’s In Your Dream?

In the early hours of the morning of September 5th, 2025, I had a dream. In my dream I received a Reduction In Force (RIF) notice from my Job, informing me I was being laid off.  However, on the face of the notice was scrawled R.I.P.  A few weeks before this, I had dreamt of Apostle Joshua Selman, whose ministering I listen to a lot, counseling me – “Ramp Up Your Resume”, he had said.

Amongst my sisters, I am called the “Joseph” of the family – the dreamer and dream interpreter – but I didn’t know what to make of these dreams put together. At best, I was going to take them at face value – and conclude that my tenure at my job was coming to an end and I needed to start job hunting. Or perhaps I was coming into a new season of my life and needed to give up on “the old” (It didn’t help that things were very unstable at work at the time). But the R.I.P. was bold, loud and made me uneasy and afraid.

A lot of people do not believe that dreams have meanings and many others say they do not dream, or do not remember their dreams. However, we have scriptural references to indicate that God communicates to us through dreams – providing Divine Wisdom (Daniel 1:17) or describing a future of an outpouring of the Spirit resulting in prophetic dreams and visions for all people (Acts 2:17). In Job 33:15-17, the Lord had boasted to Satan about His faithful servant Job, and authorized Satan to bring calamity unto Job to test him of his unwavering faithfulness to God. While commiserating with Job, his friend, Elihu insists to him that God does communicate with people in different ways though “no one perceives it” and says “In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls on people    as they slumber in their beds,He may speak in their ears and terrify them with warnings, to turn them from wrongdoing    and keep them from pride, to preserve them from the pit, their lives from perishing by the sword”.

I wasn’t sure if I was being terrified with a warning of an impending end to my job (RIF), my life (RIP) or if I was being informed to prepare for a new season (Ramp Up Your Resume). Even Pastor Stephanie Ike Okafor, who has spoken extensively on Dreams and has a book out (The Power of Your Dreams), could not help me with her take on the Source of Dreams – which she describes as “the fruit reveals the seed”. I could barely decipher the fruit, how would I know the seed?

I am an ardent believer in the power of our dreams – and anyone who is a believer of the Word/Scripture should be a believer of the power of dreams. I started writing down my dreams after listening to Minister Kevin Ewing teach about dreams and dream interpretation on scriptural basis and how to pray to cancel them, or come into agreement with dreams, depending on who we believe is the source of the dream. They say dreams could come from us, from Satan or from God, but not everyone has the ability to interpret dreams, much less, tell source of their dreams. So whenever I am faced with the dilemma of an undecipherable dream or dreams – I pray Kevin Ewing’s two-tier prayer about canceling and/or coming into agreement with your dream.  I pray to cancel them “if they are from the devil” and/or then I pray to come into agreement with them “if they are from God”. I leave it to God to do the rest.

If we know our God, we know that His ways are not our ways. He might seemingly bring calamity to our doorsteps for the fulfillment of His will and purpose – so we do not want to pray amiss, canceling dreams he has ordained or coming into agreement with dreams he hasn’t ordained just because by our “flesh” they look like blessings. While we sleep, the enemy sows tares (Mathew 13:25), and crafty as he is, he might trick us into coming into agreement with calamity, disguised as a blessing.

It’s been about five months since my dream; I still have my job but believing I am in a season of “new things” (Mathew 9:16-17) and taking intentional steps to stay consecrated to the Lord. I continue to stay steadfast in prayer according to Lamentations 3:37, questioning “who is he who speaks a thing and it stands unless the Lord has commanded or authorized it?” and declaring over my life that only the counsel of the Lord will stand.

Let’s pray also that in our unfaithfulness, the Lord doesn’t authorize Satan to test us like he did Job. We probably won’t survive it. Job in his almost perfect faithfulness barely did.
